In Memory of Pastor Moyo, a Faithful Husband, Father, and Maker of Disciples for Jesus

We mourn the loss of Pastor Moyo, a man whom God used in mighty ways to reach so many with the Gospel in his native country of Zimbabwe. Having been raised as an animist in a “traditional African home” while having a meager notion of syncretized Christianity, Pastor Moyo came to know Jesus Christ as his personal lord and savior as a young man through the faithful preaching and discipleship of an American Baptist missionary. From there, the Lord increased his understanding of Scripture ten-fold and launched him into a life of discipleship ministry. He leaves in his wake a legacy exemplifying all the aspects of one called a “good and faithful servant”, Pastor Moyo will forever be remembered as a man of great integrity before the Lord as a husband, father, and disciple-maker.

Pastor Moyo became one of our earliest national preachers when Gospelink began assisting his ministry in 1998. This amazing story, however, began in 1997, when he met Gospelink founder, Lewis Nelms, in Zimbabwe. One of their first evangelism trips together will forever be memorialized as an epic adventure and testament to God’s grace and mercy when they survived a potentially fatal car wreck on a rain-washed Zimbabwean highway. Already impressed with his understanding of the Bible and its application to the ministry in Zimbabwe, Lewis recalls how this incident revealed the depth of Pastor Moyo’s Christ-like character. Having suffered minor injuries and the loss of his truck on account of the reckless driver behind the wheel of the large bus that crashed into him, he passed no blame but rather, calmly, and compassionately put the needs of others before his own.

In the words of Lewis, Pastor Moyo was “dignified in the way he carried himself, well-spoken, and well-respected by all”. He was “gentle and soft-spoken, but when he did speak, others listened”. He was “kind and gracious in his leadership…never harsh, impatient, or judgmental of others.” Describing Pastor Moyo’s nature as “typically reserved”, when it came to discussing the Gospel and reaching Zimbabwe for Christ, his demeanor turned “red-hot passionate”. “Even thirty years ago” explains Lewis, “Pastor Moyo had already been instrumental in spearheading evangelization throughout much of his nation.”

It was just a short period of time before Gospelink appointed Pastor Moyo as National Director for Zimbabwe, a position in which he faithfully served for 25 years. During this time, he performed his duties as an exemplary leader, guiding both his own church while caring for the needs of 100+ Gospelink preachers, their families, and their churches across Zimbabwe. Under his leadership, tens of thousands were reached with the Gospel! Most importantly, Pastor Moyo was faithful to the Lord. He lived a life consecrated to God, learning and teaching His Word, caring for God’s people, and advancing God’s work. Pastor Moyo is survived by his wife, Sitheni Moyo, four sons, and two daughters, all of whom are grown and committed followers of Jesus Christ.

Pastor Moyo, you have fought the good fight and finished well. You will be missed by all!
